A Celestial Marvel at the Heart of Strasbourg

Strasbourg, the city of rich cultural heritage, has recently witnessed the grand opening of the Planétarium du Jardin des Sciences, a celestial marvel that promises to redefine the cityscape. Designed by the visionary architects frenak+jullien, in collaboration with Cardin Julien and project architect m+mathieu holdrinet, this architectural masterpiece is nestled within the Université de Strasbourg, along the prestigious Avenue de la Victoire.

Bridging the Cosmos and Earth

The Planétarium’s design draws inspiration from the cosmos and astronomy, taking visitors on an otherworldly journey. Situated between the Zoology and Geology institutes, the planetarium comprises two distinct volumes: a truncated cone housing a 138-seat projection room and an entrance gallery, and a cylindrical volume accommodating the Jardin des Sciences’ lobby and related services. The juxtaposition of these volumes symbolizes the connection between the sky and the earth, echoing the age-old human quest for knowledge of the universe.

Machine-Building Aesthetics

The architectural design pays homage to 19th-century machine buildings found on the site, such as the observatory’s dome. It also evokes the elegance of astronomical measuring instruments like the astrolabe. The metal disc atop the truncated cone responds dynamically to the changing colors of the sky, making the planetarium a captivating sight for passersby. For local residents, the planetarium resembles an astronomical instrument set amidst a lush garden, inviting contemplation.

Immersive Experience and Sustainable Design

The Planétarium offers a truly immersive experience. Visitors enter through a gently sloping circular gallery that transitions from the brightness of the hall to the cosmic theatre’s dimly lit environment. The 17-meter high CLT wood panels, forming giant facets, prepare visitors for a journey into space. The projection dome, suspended at a unique angle, intensifies the immersive effect. With minimal lighting and a deep, absorbing night-blue environment, the cosmic theatre transports visitors into the depths of the universe.

The Planétarium’s construction showcases exceptional precision, akin to nesting Russian dolls, with each volume seamlessly connected. Its exterior features burnt wood and aluminum, creating a striking contrast with its light-colored wood and plaster interior. This choice of materials not only enhances the building’s aesthetics but also aligns with environmental sustainability goals. The compactness of the design and the strategic positioning of openings on the hall side ensure optimal energy efficiency, reducing heat loss.

Conclusion: Unveiling Strasbourg’s Celestial Gem

The Planétarium du Jardin des Sciences at the Université de Strasbourg is a testament to architectural innovation and the human fascination with the cosmos. Its unique design bridges the gap between the celestial and the terrestrial, offering an unforgettable experience to all who visit. As Strasbourg looks towards the future, this architectural gem will undoubtedly remain a beacon of knowledge and inspiration, reminding us of the boundless wonders of the universe.

This visionary project, set to open its doors in the summer of 2023, reaffirms Strasbourg’s commitment to science, culture, and sustainability. It is a testament to the power of architectural excellence in shaping the cities of tomorrow, and we eagerly anticipate its contribution to the cultural landscape of Strasbourg and beyond.
