In the heart of Jayapura, Papua, The SAGA Bakery stands as a testament to blending tradition with modernity. Designed by Upper Room Collaborative Studio, the bakery’s transformation has brought a fresh perspective to the city’s culinary and architectural landscape. With its roots deep in a three-generation family legacy, SAGA Bakery offers more than just baked goods—it presents a story of evolution, design ingenuity, and cultural pride.
A Strategic Location with an Inviting Atmosphere
Situated at the entrance of a bustling shopping mall, SAGA Bakery capitalizes on its prime location. Its glass facade offers views of the surrounding area and allows natural light to pour into the space, creating a warm and welcoming environment. However, the design carefully balances aesthetics with functionality—sunlight is strategically filtered to protect the delicate baked goods from damage while maintaining an airy, vibrant feel. The placement ensures the bakery not only serves as a destination for customers but also as a landmark for those entering or passing by the mall.
Design Rooted in Arches and Portals
One of the most striking features of SAGA Bakery is its use of arches and portals, elements inspired by classical architecture. These design choices symbolize strength and legacy, nodding to the bakery’s storied history while embracing a modern aesthetic. The spatial arrangement cleverly incorporates these forms to create a fluid and engaging customer experience.
Each area serves a specific purpose: portals guide visitors through the space, creating transitions between displays, sales counters, and seating. This zoning strategy fosters a sense of intimacy and discovery as customers navigate through different sections, culminating in a grand showcase of pastries, cakes, and savory snacks. The use of vibrant red brick paired with wood and stone textures enhances the interplay between traditional and contemporary elements, creating a cohesive yet dynamic space.
Innovative Execution in a Remote Setting
Executing a complex design in Jayapura presented unique challenges. Limited access to skilled labor and materials led to an innovative solution: fabricating the bakery’s intricate elements in Jakarta and shipping them to Papua for assembly. Within just four weeks, the pieces were meticulously assembled, transforming the space into a modern bakery that still feels deeply connected to its roots. This approach underscores the ingenuity and collaboration involved in bringing the project to life.
A New Chapter for Jayapura and Papua
Since its completion in late 2023, SAGA Bakery has experienced a significant increase in foot traffic and profits, signaling its success as both a business and a community hub. Beyond its local impact, the project has garnered international recognition. It is the first interior design project in Papua to be shortlisted for the prestigious World Architecture Festival, bringing global attention to the region’s potential for creative and architectural innovation.
In merging modern retail concepts with a sense of cultural authenticity, SAGA Bakery reflects Jayapura’s growing aspirations. It stands as a model of how design can honor history while embracing change, offering both locals and visitors a place to gather, indulge, and celebrate the unique spirit of Papua.
