The Neal Math & Science Academy Redefines Learning

The Neal Math & Science Academy stands as a new symbol of progress in North Chicago. Designed by JGMA and funded by a $40 million grant from AbbVie, the academy is more than just a school—it is a response to decades of disinvestment in the community. With its striking verticality and thoughtful design, the project embraces both innovation and heritage, creating a learning environment that fosters inclusivity and connection.

A Community-Driven Design Approach

From the outset, the design of Neal Math & Science Academy was shaped by extensive community engagement. JGMA, led by architect Juan Gabriel Moreno, collaborated with local families, students, and educators to ensure the new school reflected the aspirations of North Chicago residents. One key insight was the community’s desire to “be seen” after years of neglect. This inspired the academy’s vertical form, which allows students to experience their city from new heights, symbolizing personal and academic growth.

To honor the school’s history, JGMA also preserved the existing gymnasium, integrating it into the new campus. This careful balance between past and future defines the academy’s architectural identity, reinforcing its role as both a landmark and a learning hub.

The Power of Verticality in Education

Unlike traditional school layouts, Neal Math & Science Academy rises five stories—making it the tallest building in North Chicago. This vertical approach maximizes the use of the limited site while creating a dynamic learning environment. Each floor represents a different academic grade, reinforcing a sense of progression as students advance.

Beyond symbolism, the building’s height also serves a practical function. The design brings in natural light, reduces energy consumption, and provides sweeping views of the neighborhood, fostering a deeper connection between students and their city. The colorful exterior and double-gradient façade further emphasize diversity and inclusivity, setting a precedent for future educational spaces.

Blending Education and Community Spaces

The academy is designed not just for students but for the entire North Chicago community. The ground floor features a series of flexible spaces accessible to the public, including a room for North Chicago Community Partners, a Learning Stair, and a dining commons. Outdoor plazas, a recreational sports field, and green buffers between residential areas create a seamless transition between school and neighborhood life.

By maintaining the school’s original location, JGMA also reinforced its role as a walkable community hub. The site’s layout prioritizes pedestrian access over parking, encouraging students to engage with their surroundings in a more sustainable way.

Preserving Legacy While Looking Forward

One of the project’s biggest challenges was constructing the new facility while the existing school remained operational. To address this, the design team strategically positioned the new building adjacent to the old structure, allowing for phased construction without disrupting daily school activities.

This careful planning ensured that students and teachers could transition smoothly into the new facility while maintaining the essence of their former school. The result is an academy that respects its roots while embracing the future—offering a space where students can thrive, educators can innovate, and the community can connect.
