The Forest of Knowledge: A Contemporary Library in Mumbai

In the bustling heart of Mumbai lies a transformed sanctuary for readers and the community alike: The Forest of Knowledge. This innovative library renovation at the Cricket Club of India by Studio HINGE redefines what a library can be in the digital age. Combining elements of nature with a modern approach to design, this space not only preserves the traditional essence of a library but also evolves it into a dynamic hub for learning and interaction.

Bridging Tradition and Modernity

The Forest of Knowledge is a testament to how traditional spaces can be reimagined to meet contemporary needs. The renovation takes inspiration from the concept of reading outdoors, with existing concrete columns cleverly reimagined as tree-like structures. This not only adds a unique aesthetic but also creates a calming, natural atmosphere that invites visitors to linger and explore.

The bookshelves, arranged in circular patterns reminiscent of garden hedges, further enhance this outdoor illusion. The design mimics a formal garden layout, where paths and spaces guide visitors through the collection. This approach not only makes the library visually appealing but also transforms it into a place of discovery, much like a walk through a peaceful forest.

Embracing the Digital Era

In today’s digital world, libraries must adapt to remain relevant, and The Forest of Knowledge does just that. Recognizing that libraries are no longer just about books, the design includes a repurposed Zumba studio that now serves as a multipurpose space. This area hosts a variety of community activities, from film screenings and book clubs to workshops and social gatherings.

This adaptability has proven successful, particularly in attracting younger visitors. By offering more than just a quiet place to read, the library has become a vibrant community hub where learning and interaction flourish. The shift from a traditional library to a multi-use space highlights the importance of evolving with the times while still valuing the core purpose of a library.

A Sustainable Approach

Sustainability is at the heart of The Forest of Knowledge. The design incorporates FSC-certified Canadian timber, ensuring that the materials used are environmentally responsible. The large openable windows are another key feature, allowing natural light to flood the space and reducing the need for artificial lighting. This not only creates a pleasant environment but also aligns with sustainable building practices.

Furthermore, the library’s step-free, accessible design ensures that it is welcoming to all. The lower bookshelves, designed for unobstructed views, also cater to children, making the space inclusive for readers of all ages. The labyrinthine arrangement of the shelves encourages exploration and engagement, turning the library into a place where visitors can immerse themselves in a journey of discovery.

A Community-Centered Design

At its core, The Forest of Knowledge is about fostering community. The flexible design and multi-use spaces cater to the diverse needs of the Cricket Club of India’s members. Whether it’s a quiet corner for reading or a lively area for group activities, the library accommodates all.

The renovation reflects a thoughtful consideration of how spaces can evolve to meet changing needs. By combining traditional elements with modern design and sustainability, The Forest of Knowledge has become more than just a library—it’s a vibrant, community-centered space that invites people to connect, learn, and grow together.
