Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn, the Boerum Hill Townhouse by Barker Architecture Office is a striking reimagination of urban living. Designed for a family of three with a penchant for hosting, the townhouse balances bold aesthetics with functionality. Through its rich material palette, sculptural elements, and spatial flow, the home embodies a thoughtful approach to modern residential architecture.
Barker Architecture Office: Innovation Meets Craftsmanship
Helmed by Alexandra Barker, FAIA, LEED AP, Barker Architecture Office is renowned for its explorative designs that bridge the relationship between people and their environments. This townhouse reflects the studio’s award-winning ethos by combining meticulous materiality with spaces tailored to their occupants’ needs. From educational buildings to private residences, the firm’s projects demonstrate a mastery of spatial planning and material innovation.
Design Concept: A Dance of Color, Shape, and Material
The Boerum Hill Townhouse is defined by deep, moody tones, sculptural forms, and luxurious materials, with marble taking center stage. The entryway sets the tone with green walls, a green-and-pink checkerboard floor, and a custom asymmetrical mirror. In the parlor, curvilinear furniture harmonizes with two nested marble tables and textured rugs.
Transitioning to the kitchen and dining area, a deep fluted plaster arch introduces a dynamic contrast. Calacatta vagli viola marble, mushroom-painted cabinets, and a pale oak dining setup create a warm yet sophisticated environment. Throughout the design, lighting—ranging from vintage sconces to hand-blown glass pendants—elevates the home’s atmosphere.
Functionality and Flow: A Home for Living and Hosting
This townhouse effortlessly merges private and communal spaces. The rebuilt staircase leads to a vibrant playroom and a media room painted in deep aubergine. Each room’s furnishings are as practical as they are beautiful, with elements like a chartreuse velvet sectional and custom walnut tables adding flair.
Bedrooms are equally personalized. The primary suite, adorned in soft lavender gray, incorporates stained oak accents and a luxurious bathroom with green onyx and rosa aurora macchia vecchia stone. The guest room and children’s bedrooms each bring playful details, from acid-green wallpaper to custom travertine furniture.
Outdoor spaces extend the home’s livability, with travertine checkerboard finishes unifying the deck and garden levels.
Material Highlights: A Curated Palette
Every element of the townhouse reflects the expertise of artisans and the precision of Barker Architecture Office. From the rosa aurora tiles in the skylit guest bath to the tambour-lined transition spaces, the home exudes a commitment to quality and artistry. Each space tells a cohesive story of design intent, ensuring that functionality and aesthetic delight coexist.
