Stikeman Elliott’s Calgary office has undergone a major transformation, led by Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning. With an eye on creating a space that invites both clients and employees to feel at home, Kasian brought a hospitality-inspired atmosphere to the workplace. The 40,000-square-foot redesign at Bankers Hall is striking for its seamless blend of functionality and aesthetic warmth, modernizing what was once a traditional, darkly-toned law office. By mixing inviting, open layouts with purposeful workspaces, the updated design presents a refreshing approach for a modern law firm, earning accolades such as the Canadian Interiors “Best of Canada” award and Shaw Contract’s global and regional design awards.
From Formal to Functional: Evolving the Law Office Environment
Kasian’s design team embraced flexibility by creating multi-use spaces that adapt to various needs and preferences. Gone is the more closed-off, formal office setup; in its place is an open-plan layout with meeting rooms lined with floor-to-ceiling glazing. This allows natural light to filter into the space while maintaining privacy with tasteful frosted film. The design strikes a balance between sophisticated client areas and functional employee workspaces, with the front-facing rooms easily shifting from business meetings to social gatherings. A dedicated lawyers’ lounge and student articling areas foster a sense of community, with the addition of amenities like a dining area for those working late into the evening.
Statement Design Features with Practical Details
One of the project’s standout features is a central, u-shaped staircase crowned by a gold-gilded canopy structure. With its gridded design and powder-coated golden metalwork, the canopy adds visual interest and elegance while serving as a functional gathering point across floors. Suspended above the staircase is a custom lighting fixture by Moooi, which complements the space’s architectural details. The staircase, which meets fire codes with a practical handrail design, not only provides a focal point but also enhances movement between floors. Additionally, decorative sconces and carefully selected light features throughout the space add ambiance, highlighting the firm’s art collection and furthering the warm, inviting atmosphere.
Modern Materials and Tech-Friendly Workspaces
The material selection in Stikeman Elliott’s office leans toward clean, modern elements, providing both visual appeal and functionality. Rich timber accents, stonework, and custom furnishings give the space a luxurious feel without overwhelming. To manage costs, Kasian opted for back-painted glass and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring, achieving a premium look while staying within budget. Advanced audio-visual capabilities and flexible tech setups enable seamless client presentations and collaborative work, reinforcing the design’s forward-thinking approach. Whether working solo or in a group, staff can take advantage of the range of thoughtfully designed spaces.
An Elevated Experience with Unmatched Views
Kasian’s redesign also maximizes the office’s location in downtown Calgary, where floor-to-ceiling windows offer sweeping views of the Calgary Tower, the river valley, and even out to the Rocky Mountains. In the reception and client areas, these views form an impressive backdrop, underscoring the firm’s strong connection to the city. According to Stikeman Elliott’s design committee, the refreshed office captures the firm’s values, merging professional rigor with a welcoming, collaborative feel. This thoughtful redesign shows that law offices don’t have to be formal and closed off; they can be spaces that feel engaging and approachable, with room for connection and comfort.
