Screen 504 by Sanjay Puri Architects in Udaipur

Screen 504 is a striking new residential project in Udaipur, Rajasthan, designed by Sanjay Puri Architects. This 21-story apartment building adapts to its environment, drawing inspiration from the region’s historical architecture while integrating sustainable and functional design strategies. With its innovative use of screened balconies and a layout that maximizes natural light and ventilation, the building responds effectively to the city’s climate and landscape.

Sanjay Puri Architects: A Vision Rooted in Context

Sanjay Puri Architects is known for their contextual approach to architecture, often weaving cultural and environmental influences into their designs. The firm, ranked among the world’s top architecture studios, has won numerous international awards for projects that push the boundaries of form and function. For Screen 504, they have crafted a residential tower that not only meets contemporary living standards but also pays homage to Rajasthan’s architectural heritage.

Design Concept: A Dialogue Between Past and Present

The design of Screen 504 takes cues from traditional Rajasthani architecture, particularly the region’s use of jharokhas—projected balcony spaces that provide shade and privacy. The building features a mix of open and screened decks in front of each room, allowing residents to regulate sunlight exposure and airflow according to the changing seasons. These screens, adorned with traditional perforated patterns, can be adjusted to offer varying degrees of enclosure. Additionally, some apartments have double-height decks that extend 20 feet, creating a dynamic interplay of indoor and outdoor space.

Maximizing Functionality and Comfort

With 78 spacious four-bedroom apartments, Screen 504 is designed for functionality as much as aesthetics. Each apartment is strategically placed to ensure cross-ventilation and unobstructed views of Udaipur’s distant hills. The layout minimizes internal corridors, ensuring that all living spaces receive ample daylight. The ground floor houses community amenities, including a gym, swimming pool, games room, and a hall for gatherings. A rooftop terrace with a landscaped garden further enhances the living experience, offering residents a shared space for relaxation and recreation.

Sustainability: A Holistic Approach

Sustainability is integral to the project’s design. The building employs a rainwater harvesting system, directing water from balconies and terraces into storage tanks for reuse. Wastewater is also treated and repurposed for gardening, reducing reliance on external water sources. Construction materials, such as fly ash bricks and locally sourced sandstone, contribute to the building’s eco-friendly footprint, while the use of locally sourced labor supports the regional economy.

Screen 504 exemplifies how contemporary architecture can embrace traditional wisdom while responding to modern needs. By integrating climate-sensitive design and community-oriented spaces, Sanjay Puri Architects have created a residence that is both functional and deeply connected to its surroundings.
