Highlights

Design year: 2018-2020
Completion Year: 2021
Gross Built Area: 8,334 m²
Materials: Natural rock

Located in Markam County, Tibet, the **Quzika 1865 Winery Complex** by **PL-T Architecture Studio** blends seamlessly into its surrounding environment. The project aims to boost the local economy by providing a **cultural tourism experience** while preserving the **natural landscape** and traditions of the area.

Design Concept and Integration with Nature

Set against the **Dameiyong Snow Mountain** and the **Lancang River**, the winery is carefully embedded within the mountain terraces, preserving ancient walnut trees and grape vines. The architecture follows the land’s natural contours, making it almost invisible and fully integrated into its environment. Using gravity-flow, the winery’s production process is spread across different terrace levels, minimizing earthwork and harmonizing with the site’s natural features.

Respecting Tibetan Culture and Traditions

The design reflects the architects’ deep respect for **Tibetan culture**, with extensive research involving 20 site visits over two years. **Local materials**, such as existing stones, are used to build walls, creating a continuation of the original stone landscape while providing natural insulation.

Functional and Aesthetic Features

The public spaces, including a museum, restaurant, and reception center, are designed as three “rocks” set within a recreated salt field on the winery’s roof. The interplay of **light and shadows** on the reflective water surfaces adds a dynamic element to the experience, creating a poetic connection between the architecture and nature.

Social Impact and Community Involvement

The winery also serves as a **communal space** for local villagers, breaking the boundary between industrial and civic functions. By integrating daily village life with the winery’s operation, the project becomes a medium for **community engagement**. The architects hope this inclusive design will provide opportunities for local youth and alleviate poverty.

The Quzika Winery is a testament to **natural symbiosis**, respecting both the landscape and the community while creating a space that feels timeless and deeply rooted in the region’s history. Learn more about the architects at PL-T Architecture Studio.
