A Historic Venue Reimagined
In the heart of Linz, Austria, Pizzeria 22k stands as a testament to innovative design and culinary excellence. Nestled within the historic Bauhaus halls of Peter Behrens’ tobacco factory, this pizzeria is not just about great food; it’s a celebration of architectural heritage and contemporary design. Built between 1925-39, the factory is notable for being Austria’s first steel skeleton building, epitomizing the New Objectivity style. Today, Pizzeria 22k brings a modern twist to this venerable space, blending history with a fresh, vibrant aesthetic.
Masterful Interior Design by destilat
When tasked with transforming the 50m² space, destilat design studio faced stringent monument protection regulations that prohibited altering the floor plan. Undeterred, the team infused the room with a striking deep black palette, creating a dramatic yet elegant atmosphere. Starting with an existing poured asphalt floor, every surface was meticulously coated in black, enhancing the room’s depth and sophistication. This bold choice sets the stage for an interior that’s both cohesive and visually compelling.
The Charm of Shou Sugi Ban
One of the standout features of Pizzeria 22k is its use of the Shou Sugi Ban technique on wooden elements. This traditional Japanese method involves charring the wood, which not only preserves the material but also makes it water-resistant and adds a unique aesthetic. The result is a series of wooden surfaces in varying dark shades, each with its own distinct texture and character. This technique brings a timeless, natural beauty to the interior, connecting the old with the new in a seamless, organic manner.
A Central Bar with Character
The centerpiece of Pizzeria 22k is undoubtedly its bar, a masterful creation that combines raw materials with refined design. Made from recycled red plane bricks, the bar features a honeycomb structure that’s both eye-catching and functional. The bricks are stacked on sight, filled with dark joint compound, sanded smooth, and edged with sleek black sheet metal. Backlighting adds a dramatic touch, highlighting the bar’s intricate details and giving it a museum-like presence in the monochrome setting. This central element not only serves as a focal point but also underscores the pizzeria’s commitment to sustainability and innovative design.
Respecting History with Bold Design Choices
Destilat’s approach to Pizzeria 22k is a masterclass in balancing respect for historical architecture with bold, modern design. The studio’s philosophy is clear: historical buildings should be approached with appreciation but not fear. This mindset allowed them to create an interior that doesn’t just blend into its surroundings but makes a statement. The use of elegant black Thonet seating complements the overall aesthetic, providing a touch of classic elegance that ties the entire space together.
Conclusion: A Unique Dining Experience
Pizzeria 22k is more than just a place to enjoy a meal; it’s an experience that engages all the senses. From the rich history of its location to the meticulous design details crafted by destilat, every aspect of this pizzeria has been thoughtfully curated to offer something truly special. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, stepping into Pizzeria 22k is like stepping into a work of art, where culinary delights meet architectural brilliance.
