Asymtote Architecture has announced a large development project located in northern Malaysia: Penang Global City Center (PGCC) recently. The project covers 400,000 sq. m. of retail complex, 100,000 sq. m. of conventionm center, 75,000 sq. m. of Penang Performing Arts Center (PenPAC), 70,000 sq. m. of condomonium, 50,000 sq. m. of Hotel and Service Apartments, 25,000 sq. m. of offices, 1,500 sq. m. of Observatory, and 190,000 sq. m. of parking. As reported by dezeen.com, this project was unveiled last week by Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
According to the press release, here are the design concept:
“Asymptote’s design for the PGCC complex is centered on the idea of creating a new and powerful image for the city of Penang and the new initatives associated with the development of the Northern Corridor of Malaysia. The design achieves its elegance and stature through the simultaneous embrace of natural landscapes and contemporary urbanism. The PGCC will become a vital new precinct that complements and enhances the unique characteristics that typify Penang as a remarkable island metropolis. The design of the iconic towers in particular draws inspiration from not only the lushness and drama of the surrounding mountains and seascapes, but also from the rich and diverse cultural heritage that makes up the Malaysian nation and Penang in particular.”

[…] Malaysia, Penang Global Center Center […]
I think by having the PGCC in Penang, it will symbolize a transformation of north of Malaysia to modernity, adding a skyline which have never been seen in Penang. It would also symbolise again the advancement in engineering for Malaysia.
How I wish Kota Kinabalu would also have a landmark like that in the not so far future.

I always wonder why “great architecture” usually involves spending zillions of $’s of other peoples money in the most ostentatious way possible, while using all the most expensive materials. All – usually for space very few will use.
I don’t think I really want to know the answer, but I do wonder.
Hi all,
I personally think the idea or concept of the Global City is absolutely great. We need Super Cities throughout the world with revolutionalise designs that is highly pleasant for the eye to see as well as blend in the environment and fits well with the environment and culture of the region which needs to be consider throughly but not like another common city throughout the world. Basically it needs a true essence of Malaysian Identity, Malaysian culture feeling which everyone in the world will know it is truly Malaysian and like no other place or city in the world but not a copy cat version of another city – maybe Dubai I think. It looks like a city from the science fiction film “LOGAN RUN” based on the novel of the same name by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson.
It depicts a dystopian future society in which population and the consumption of resources is managed and maintained in equilibrium by the simple expediency of killing everyone who reaches the age of thirty, thus avoiding the issue of overpopulation which was of growing concern at the time. The story follows the actions of Logan 5, a “Sandman”, as he “runs” from society’s lethal demand.
The 1976 film version, directed by Michael Anderson and starring Michael York, Richard Jordan, and Jenny Agutter, was shot primarily in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex (including locations such as the Fort Worth Water Gardens and the Dallas Market Center) between June and September 1975. The film only uses the basic premise from the novel (everyone must die at a specific age, Logan runs with Jessica as his companion while being chased by Francis). The motivations of the characters are quite different in the film.
The film won an Academy Award for Special Achievement for its visual effects, and was nominated for two other Oscars. It received the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film, and was nominated for a Nebula Award for Best Script. Logan’s Run was the first film made using Dolby Stereo.
Since 1994, a remake of the film has been in development hell.
I hope we are not going to the direction of the film “LOGAN RUN” because if so there will will be major problems, I think populations control is something that needs to be look at and consider thoroughly by encouraging women to be self empowered without letting go of their bodies to Male Dominance Societies “Patriachy Societies” which needs to be thoroughly re-educated.
I like the idea of the development of this new creation but I think it might lead to unknown concept of thinking which is highly dangerous which might be end of civilisation which of all of us do not want at all. When we are creating new concept of thinking of a New Universial Civilisation. I also think that societal safety nets needs to be consider thoroughly with total re-education programs and also avoid following the “TOTAL RECALL” film concept as well which is highly dangerous and I do not like at all.
I hope that helps and I am very sorry that I am highly critical but I think critical thinking is the way forward because we are eliminating mistakes which all of us which might not be able to see at all.
