Nine X Nine is a sustainable residential project nestled in Gandhinagar, India, where modern design meets nature. Developed by Sanjay Puri Architects, this home blurs the boundaries between built space and the natural landscape, responding thoughtfully to the local climate and site context.
The Visionary Team Behind the Project
At the heart of Nine X Nine is the creative force of Sanjay Puri Architects. Led by Ar. Sanjay Puri and Ar. Nina Puri, the firm has garnered international recognition for its contextual and sustainable design approaches. Their work consistently reflects a careful balance of modern aesthetics and environmental sensitivity. In this project, their reputation for thoughtful spatial narratives is evident, as they weave together existing natural elements with a design that feels both grounded and forward-thinking.
Designing in Harmony with Nature
The design concept of Nine X Nine is a celebration of nature’s organic forms. Fluid volumes traverse a 3,311 sqm plot, carefully integrating nine existing trees into the overall composition. The home’s T-shaped plan is not just a layout but a deliberate response to its surroundings—each tree plays a role in guiding movement and framing views. The entry is subtly revealed as one moves between clusters of trees, and every interior space connects to expansive, cantilevered decks. These transitional spaces provide a seamless integration between the indoors and the lush garden, enhancing the connection with nature.
Spaces That Balance Form and Function
Functionality and aesthetics come together across three thoughtfully arranged levels. The ground floor welcomes residents with a living room, dining area, kitchen, and guest bedroom, all designed to open onto the garden. The upper level houses three family bedrooms, each thoughtfully oriented to frame views of trees and greenery. Below ground, a unique subterranean space caters to entertainment and art, with a sunken courtyard that invites natural light and airflow. The clever arrangement of these levels creates a dynamic yet coherent spatial experience, where every room is a part of a larger conversation with the outdoors.
Sustainability in Practice
Sustainability isn’t an afterthought at Nine X Nine—it’s integral to the design. The building is oriented to take full advantage of the natural garden, reducing heat gain in a climate where temperatures can exceed 35°C, and even reach 50°C in summer. Passive cooling strategies are elegantly implemented through features such as a waterfall in the sunken courtyard and a shallow reflecting pool, both of which help cool the interior spaces naturally. Additionally, the project incorporates water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and extensive natural lighting, making air conditioning unnecessary for most of the year. This commitment to eco-friendly design demonstrates that style and sustainability can indeed coexist harmoniously.
