The Nezo showroom in Bandra, Mumbai, designed by Sanjay Puri Architects, reimagines the concept of modern retail with a bold, futuristic space that highlights both emerging Indian designers and customer experience. The 1,800-square-foot showroom, completed in October 2024, aims to unite designers under one roof, presenting a space that’s both creatively vibrant and spatially immersive. With a neutral design language that subtly champions empowerment, Nezo invites visitors to “Wear Your Power” while exploring a variety of contemporary fashion collections.
An Open Layout Designed for Discovery
From the outset, the Nezo showroom aims to be an inviting and accessible space, crafted with an open floor plan that guides visitors through a seamless experience. A sleek, curved chrome steel reception area lines the left wall upon entry, setting a bold and refined tone. In the center, a comfortable lounge area offers a relaxed space for visitors to take in their surroundings or contemplate their outfit selections. Clothing racks line the store’s perimeter, ensuring an open central space that encourages free movement while subtly nudging visitors toward various sections. Strategically placed pedestal clusters are used to highlight accessories, creating interactive “island” displays that feel inviting rather than overwhelming.
Architectural Integration and Playful Details
The showroom’s architectural design takes full advantage of its structural elements by repurposing two prominent columns within the space. Rather than seeing these as obstructions, Sanjay Puri Architects cleverly integrated them into the overall flow: the backs of these columns serve as fitting rooms, while their front sides are fitted with accessory shelves, maximizing both function and form. One of these columns even boasts a whimsical yarn installation—a glass box filled with brightly colored yarn balls—creating a fun backdrop for impromptu photoshoots and a unique touch that captures Nezo’s vibrant spirit.
Materials That Marry Boldness with Subtlety
Material selection in the Nezo showroom reflects a nuanced balance between bold statements and restrained elegance. Chrome reflective steel dominates the reception area and custom racks, giving the space a modern, polished aesthetic. Meanwhile, two-color tiled pedestals with blue grout introduce a subtle pop of color that resonates with Nezo’s branding. To soften the showroom’s industrial materials, a white-wash texture was applied to the walls, creating a Greek-inspired touch that offsets the chrome’s sheen. Additionally, the entire floor is treated with blue-pigmented concrete, the founder’s favorite hue, adding continuity and grounding the space.
Curated Lighting and Organic Design Elements
Lighting plays a central role in enhancing the showroom’s atmosphere, with a ceiling installation of continuous LED rope lights that seem to flow like a wave across the space. This sculptural element not only illuminates but adds a dynamic movement that ties the showroom’s design elements together. Furniture and accessories also reflect Nezo’s brand ethos, featuring a blend of organic and geometric forms—soft, organically shaped carpets lie under more angular pedestals, and unique blue “blob” accents complement the showroom’s color palette. Every item, down to the mannequins and handle designs, has been thoughtfully crafted to echo the space’s overall vision.
A Unique, Empowering Space for Indian Designers
The Nezo showroom brings a fresh, elevated approach to fashion retail in Mumbai, thoughtfully curated to showcase emerging Indian designers and offer an immersive customer experience. By blending open, interactive spaces with innovative architectural details and playful installations, Sanjay Puri Architects have crafted a showroom that celebrates modern Indian fashion in a bold, balanced, and empowering way. The design is a fitting tribute to Nezo’s goal of uniting creativity and style, underscoring the belief that Indian designers represent the future of fashion.
