New Student Commons Honors Medgar Evers at CUNY

The Bedford Building at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn has undergone a significant transformation, with its once-transitory lobby reimagined into a Student Commons that reflects the legacy of its namesake. Designed by ikon.5 architects, the space offers a vibrant, multi-functional environment that honors Medgar Evers’ contributions to civil rights while meeting the practical needs of the college community.

Celebrating Legacy Through Design

Medgar Evers College, named after the renowned civil rights leader, has embraced its mission to inspire students with the values of courage and perseverance. The Student Commons reflects this ethos through wall murals and environmental graphics celebrating Evers’ life and work. These visual elements serve as daily reminders of his unwavering pursuit of justice and human dignity, creating a sense of purpose and belonging for all who pass through the space.

A Thoughtful Design Approach

ikon.5 architects, known for their innovative and expressive designs, approached this project with a focus on accessibility, functionality, and inspiration. The space features vibrant yellow accents on selected walls and furnishings, adding warmth and vitality to the Commons. The oversized staircase on the east side was relocated and reconfigured to eliminate safety concerns and improve visibility to the adjacent Atrium, resulting in a more open and welcoming layout. Other improvements include upgraded glass entry walls and doors to meet ADA accessibility standards, ensuring the Commons is inclusive for all users. The thoughtful integration of modern lighting, digital media screens, and terrazzo flooring enhances the environment, blending form and function seamlessly.

A Space Designed for Connection

The Student Commons is more than a lobby; it’s a hub for connection. Designed to accommodate both social and academic interactions, the space provides a versatile setting for students and visitors. Whether used for casual gatherings, quiet study sessions, or events, the Commons supports the diverse needs of the college community. Relocating the north entry doors expanded the usable area, creating additional opportunities for engagement. Enhanced safety features and practical additions, such as new security desks, further support the functionality of the space. These elements ensure the Commons is not just a tribute to the past but a forward-looking resource for Medgar Evers College.
