In 2019, a vision took shape in Svendborg as the Svendborg International Maritime Academy (SIMAC) emerged, not just as an educational institution but as a beacon of transformation for the city and harbor. Supported by SMUC Fonden with backing from the A.P. MøllerskeStøttefond, this architectural marvel, spanning 11,800m², is set to redefine maritime education in Denmark.

The Architectural Marvel

With C.F. Møller Architects and EFFEKT at the helm, the SIMAC stands as a testament to innovative design. The structure, designed as a cross, seamlessly integrates with urban spaces, forming a cornerstone to four squares. This unique design not only symbolizes modern education but also contributes to the metamorphosis of an industrial area into a vibrant district, blending education, business, and recreation.

A Maritime Beacon

SIMAC goes beyond traditional boundaries by integrating into the harbor promenade and surrounding urban spaces. The building’s layout opens up, providing public access to communal facilities. The quay transforms into an outdoor laboratory, showcasing the institution’s dedication to maritime virtues and practical learning.

Flexible Framework for Modern Education

At the heart of SIMAC lies a modular construction grid, fostering openness and flexibility. This grid allows for easy reconfiguration of layouts without disrupting the structure, creating a versatile space for workshops, teaching rooms, and offices. The design caters to both large classrooms and smaller units, adapting to the evolving needs of education.

The Social Nexus

An atrium serves as the central hub, connecting the building across floors. Surrounding this space are double-height areas housing key functions like a canteen, auditoria, and workshops. The staircase culminates in a communal roof terrace, offering panoramic views of the harbor, Svendborg Sund, and the city. This architectural masterpiece promotes social interaction, making navigation within the building seamless.

Conclusion

The SIMAC in Svendborg is not just a structure; it’s a testament to the fusion of functionality and utilization. Exposed concrete surfaces and robust floors exemplify a commitment to durability. Glass sections between the atrium and teaching rooms ensure visibility and dialogue. SIMAC is more than an educational institution; it’s a symbol of progress, seamlessly blending into the fabric of Svendborg’s future.
