METRO’s latest venture in Terrebonne marries cutting-edge automation with thoughtful architectural design. The new distribution centre not only serves as a key logistics hub for fresh and frozen products but also embodies a creative collaboration between top local design firms.
Innovative Architectural Collaboration
The project is the result of a creative partnership between GKC Architecture & Design and Imperatori Design. GKC took the lead on the overall architectural vision while Imperatori Design crafted the interior design for the administrative centre and daycare, resulting in a cohesive design that balances operational efficiency with a welcoming work environment.
A Bold and Functional Design Concept
Drawing inspiration from METRO’s signature bright red, the design juxtaposes bold hues with neutral grey and black elements. The exterior features dynamic façades with vertical bands and varied textures that create visual interest and soften the building’s long profile. A standout feature is the warehouse’s 34-metre-high volume—twice the standard height—which not only maximizes storage capacity but also minimizes the building’s footprint, aligning form with function.
Seamless Integration of Automation and Space
At the heart of the centre’s operations is a sophisticated German-engineered Witron robotic system. This automation enhances the handling of 40,000 pallets across temperature-controlled zones, ensuring that both fresh and frozen products are efficiently managed. The integration of technology reflects a forward-thinking approach that reduces physical strain on workers and streamlines operations.
Sustainable Strategies and Environmental Integration
Environmental considerations played a pivotal role in shaping the project. The design prioritizes effective water management with an underground retention basin and a permanent treatment-equipped basin that ease the burden on municipal systems. The centre’s compact footprint, along with a white roof to counter the heat island effect and one-third of the site dedicated to green spaces, underscores a commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the hybrid refrigeration system recovers heat to warm adjacent office spaces and the daycare, reflecting a practical reuse of energy that benefits both the environment and building occupants.
