How to Decorate a Room to Make It Look Light and Airy

Does your room look a bit dull? Maybe it’s the size, the lack of windows, or the decor. While you can’t change the first two, you can easily switch up the decor to make a room look light and airy.

Not sure how to start? Here are a few simple tricks to give your room a fresh lift with minimal effort.

1. Stick to lighter colours

It’s a well-known fact that lighter colours can make a room seem more spacious and airier. But that doesn’t mean you have to paint the whole room white. You can pick neutral colours like beiges and creams and even muted shades of green, grey, and blue. If you wish to add more colour, you can do so with the help of furnishings, wall art, cushions, and rugs.

2. Keep accessories to a minimum

While accessories do increase the visual appeal of a room, too many can make it seem cluttered. It is especially true for a small space.

Often, a few statement decor choices like hanging a big, bold painting on the wall or throwing a vibrant rug on the floor can give your space a character without adding clutter.

Also, if you don’t wish to spoil the room’s look with bulky heating and cooling systems, opt for ducted air conditioning. It will ensure your space stays comfortable all year round, without interrupting the decor.

3. Opt for multiple lighting

The lights you install in the room can also make a difference. Instead of choosing lights that glare, go for soft lights placed in different spots to create a lovely ambience. Multiple lights can easily brighten the whole room, making it look more spacious.

Also, try to allow as much natural light into the room as possible. For this, you can try keeping your windows open or replacing your heavy curtains with light and sheer ones.

4. Choose the furniture carefully

Last but not least, you need to be careful about the furniture you purchase for the room. Avoid large and heavy furniture as these take up a considerable amount of space, making the room seem smaller. Instead, go for furniture designed from lightweight materials like wrought iron or wicker that you can quickly move around as and when needed.

Also pay attention to how you position the furniture inside you room. Make sure not to line them up too close to the wall. Leave at least 2-4 inches of space between a piece of furniture and the wall. This extra space creates an illusion of space, making your room look larger.

5. Restrict the use of patterns

Take care not to overwhelm your room with too many patterns. When choosing drapes, carpets, and fabrics, aim for mixing various textures while keeping the patterns limited. This will lighten up the space while making sure your eyes don’t get too busy, which can play up the sense of visual clutter.

These ideas can transform your room and take it from boring to brilliant in terms of how it looks and feels.
