Press release April 04, 2011
ISSAQUAH, Wash. HighMark Investments (HMI) announced today that the HighMark Medical Center has been awarded LEED Gold certification, the first medical facility in Issaquah to receive the designation.
“HighMark is very proud of the efforts of all parties involved with this project to achieve this success,†stated HighMark CEO Michael Kerby. “LEED Gold was our goal from the start of the project, and while the team was challenged at times, collaboration and diligence ensured we would reach that goal.â€
The HighMark Medical Center was designed and constructed as a community facility minimizing negative environmental impacts while protecting and enhancing neighboring wetlands and surrounding areas. Features include rain gardens plus designed low energy use, lighting, and water use, along with other sustainable strategies. Ongoing efforts include environmentally friendly janitorial services, pest control prevention and landscaping practices.
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED green building certification system is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. By using less energy, LEED-certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council, adds, “HighMark Medical Center’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership. The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and HighMark serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.â€
The project team included project owner HMI, architects Lance Mueller & Associates and Bob Fadden, with Rushforth Construction as general contractor. PacLand, Talasaea, and ArchEcology provided engineering, wetlands and LEED consultation services.
