Connecticut Science Center (CSC)

The green Science Center in Hartford, Connecticut has been opened for public since June 13. Utilizing a hydrogen fuel cell to provide the majority of its power, The building which is called Connecticut Science Center (CSC) has received the coveted Gold Level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

OVERVIEW:
We’re all born with curiosity and imagination, driving us to explore the unknown. Inside every young mind is a relentless drive to ask, imagine and create. This is the heart of science. In today’s hyper-speed world, there’s an urgent need to nurture young students with science and math education. With exhibits rivaling the most unique in the world and cutting-edge programs that can not be found anywhere else, the new Connecticut Science Center is more than just an attraction, it is a first-rate educational destination.

Recognizing the need for science literacy and a new attraction in downtown Hartford, the idea of a science center has been a dream of many corporate and civic leaders in Connecticut for nearly the past 20 years. In 2001, the center was founded as the Connecticut Center for Science & Exploration and in September of 2004, architect Cesar Pelli was chosen for the project after an international competition. Construction on the center began in January of 2006 and June 2009 will mark the opening of the Connecticut Science Center to the public.

The Connecticut Science Center’s vision is to inspire the next generation of scientists and creative thinkers who will impact our future, from curing diseases to saving the environment. It can also inspire students of all backgrounds, from those studying law and getting their online criminal justice degree to those studying medicine and biology. Many roads will intersect in this building to bring the best and the brightest together to lead us into the future.

LOCATION:
250 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford, CT 06103 The Connecticut Science Center is located in the state’s capital city of Hartford, just 2 hours from New York City and 1.5 hours from Boston. One of the oldest cities in the country, Hartford lies on the banks of the Connecticut River and is steeped in historical attractions and cultural institutions. Today, the city is undergoing revitalization along the riverfront with a recently completed convention center, hotel and a retail/residential development that are all a part of the Adriaen’s Landing development. The waterfront in Hartford is developing as a “must see” destination for locals and visitors alike, offering a combination of historical and new attractions.

CONNECTICUT SCIENCE CENTER STATISTICS:
x The Science Center is 144,000 square feet in total. On-site 450-space parking garage. Outdoor plaza level connects the Science Center to Riverfront Recapture’s Mortensen Plaza (with access to the river and cruises), to downtown pedestrian bridges and, when complete in May 2010, a pedestrian bridge to the Connecticut Convention Center.

x Skyline-changing distinctive building designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli. A soaring central atrium (143’ at its tallest point, 15 stories tall) sits below the signature Magic Carpet Roof and separates two towers filled with exhibits, attractions, and visitor amenities.

x Green, LEED-Certified (likely Gold) building. Some 95% of steel used in construction is manufactured from recycled cars; fuel cell that will supply majority of building’s power; accessible planted rooftop garden; energy-saving glass and sensors within the building that detect the level of ambient light.

x Some 40,000 square feet of exhibit space that accommodates 150 hands-on experiences in ten galleries: Exploring Space, A River of Life; Invention Dimension, The Picture of Health, Kidspace, Sight and Sound Experience, Energy City, Sports Lab, Forces In Motion, and Planet Earth, plus a traveling exhibition gallery.

x 3D Digital Theater features state-of-the-art Dolby® technology: stadium seating for 200 guests, 30’ x 40’ screen, 18,000 watt sound system and unique battery-powered 3D glasses. Two to three 3D shows playing at any one time; live downlinks and other programs will be featured in this space.

x Four specially equipped laboratories, including a Forensic Science Lab, Wet Lab, Distance Learning Lab, and Mission Simulator. On-site Gallery Scientists present live science demonstrations FREE for visitors. Year-round programs and events.

x Science-themed gifts in the shop. Café serves local, organically-grown food. Catering and event rental space available.

ADMISSION:
General Admission to the Connecticut Science Center is $16 for adults, $15 for seniors and $13 for children between the ages of three and 17. Children aged two and under receive free admission. Combination tickets for 3D movies: $19 for adults, $18 for seniors, $16 for children.
