COCOON Freelancer: Redefining Sustainable Mobile Living

Designed by AttiaDesign in collaboration with Weidlich moon-wood manufactory, the COCOON Freelancer is an extraordinary take on mobile living. Combining ancient craftsmanship techniques with modern ingenuity, this compact mobile space offers a minimalist approach to life on the road, all while prioritizing sustainability and health.

A Vision Rooted in Tradition

The creator behind the COCOON Freelancer, Maruan Attia, brings a multicultural perspective and years of industrial design expertise to the project. Inspired by traditional Alpine houses and Japanese temples known for their longevity, Attia sought to craft a space that celebrates natural materials and timeless methods. He partnered with Schreinerei Weidlich to achieve the unique structural integrity required for the project, particularly the use of moon-wood, harvested in harmony with lunar cycles. Moon-wood, used extensively in Alpine architecture, offers superior durability, insect resistance, and dimensional stability, eliminating the need for chemical treatments. This material choice reflects a commitment to health and sustainability, as it creates an organic indoor environment free of glue, chemicals, and plastics.

A Mobile Haven for Modern Nomads

Designed as a solution for freelancers, creatives, and nomads, the COCOON Freelancer functions as a versatile mobile workspace and living area. Its lightweight construction (under 3.5 tons) means it can be driven with a standard B driving license, making it accessible and convenient. Inside, every detail has been thoughtfully curated for flexibility and efficiency. The interiors feature a transformative lounge-bed combination, ample storage, a TinyStove for heating, and a gas-powered kitchen. Stainless steel is used for the water system, avoiding plastics altogether. This setup supports long-term living or working on the go, with smart design choices that enhance usability and comfort.

An Ecosystem for Well-being

Health and sustainability are central to the COCOON Freelancer’s design philosophy. The untreated wooden walls offer natural breathability, regulating humidity and preventing mold, while also enhancing indoor air quality. Additionally, the design shields against electrosmog, reducing electromagnetic radiation exposure—a rare feature in mobile living solutions. The use of lightweight vacuum glass with high insulation properties ensures the space remains energy-efficient, regardless of weather conditions. Meanwhile, the natural light flow supports the body’s circadian rhythm, promoting better sleep and overall well-being.

Functional and Resilient Architecture

Beyond its aesthetic and health benefits, the COCOON Freelancer is built to withstand the challenges of mobile living. Its exterior wood panels develop a protective gray patina over time, making them weather-resistant without chemical finishes. The roof’s solar panels provide over 900W of renewable energy, enabling off-grid living. The structure incorporates innovative details like integrated dilatation joints, allowing the wood to expand and contract naturally without cracking. Hand-tightened nuts secure the interior, making disassembly easy and allowing the entire structure to be unloaded by a single person. The COCOON Freelancer merges architecture, sustainability, and functionality into a cohesive design that celebrates independence and minimalism. It stands as a testament to Attia’s vision of reimagining how we interact with space, mobility, and the natural world.
