Studio Vapore, a Beijing-based design studio, has reimagined the elementary school library at the Western Academy of Beijing. Combining functionality with imagination, the renovated space draws children into a world of exploration and learning.
The Architect’s Vision
Founded by Italian architect Erica Borsa, Studio Vapore specializes in designs that tell stories. This project reflects the studio’s dedication to creating spaces that inspire creativity and align with modern educational needs. With a multidisciplinary team, the firm brought expertise in architecture, interiors, and custom furniture design to craft a unique library environment.
A Design Rooted in Storytelling
The library’s design takes inspiration from timeless children’s tales worldwide, transforming it into a realm of discovery. Themed platforms of varying heights define the space, offering children flexible zones to read, study, or engage in group activities. Highlights include a bamboo forest platform and a village-themed area, complete with a hut and cave for storytelling sessions. At the heart of the library is the Tibetan-inspired storytelling tower, a centerpiece that blends culture with imagination. This structure leads to a suspended net area, where students can relax and observe the space from a new perspective. The warm and harmonious color palette, drawn from traditional Chinese temples, adds to the library’s inviting atmosphere.
Interactivity and Innovation
Interactive features like whispering tubes, periscopes, and hidden crystals add an element of play to the library. These tactile and engaging elements encourage curiosity and exploration among young learners. To ensure a serene yet functional environment, acoustic panels were integrated to manage noise levels, allowing multiple activities to occur simultaneously without disruption.
Functionality Meets Creativity
This reimagined library is more than a repository for books—it’s a multifunctional hub for education. Modular, circular bookshelves provide flexibility, accommodating both individual study and collaborative learning. The library balances its playful aspects with practical solutions to meet the needs of students and educators alike. By blending thoughtful design with modern educational principles, Studio Vapore has turned the library into a dynamic space where children can learn, grow, and imagine.
