Adelphi Townhouse: A Curated Brooklyn Family Home

The Adelphi Townhouse in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, is a thoughtfully redesigned residence crafted by Barker Architecture Office. The project reimagines a four-story townhouse, embracing a neutral palette of white tones and white oak, complemented by hints of yellow and blue. Rather than traditional moldings and paneling, the interiors feature tambour oak millwork, reeded glass, textured plaster, and terrazzo surfaces, providing a refreshing aesthetic.

Designing for Family Life

The project began with addressing significant structural challenges: the existing stair was almost unusable, and the rear wall had a noticeable bulge. The original design also featured higher ceilings on the second floor compared to the first. To accommodate the family of four, the architects restructured the space, creating a more navigable layout and equalizing the ceiling heights. The entryway was designed with functionality in mind, featuring blue and white patterned tile, a custom bench, and cabinetry for stroller storage.

Open and Connected Living Spaces

Inside, the parlor floor is kept deliberately open, allowing easy supervision of the children. Custom millwork pieces create visual harmony throughout, with built-in shelving flanking the living room fireplace and a custom sideboard adjoining the dining table. The kitchen benefits from higher ceilings, achieved by raising the floor at the back of the house. The space is anchored by a reeded glass and oak cabinet, paired with arabescato antico marble countertops and a built-in upholstered banquette. A striking yellow plastered wall with steel windows frames the garden view.

Private and Playful Spaces

The second floor serves as the primary suite, with a full steel window wall opening onto a private terrace. A custom corner desk creates a dedicated workspace, while the bathroom features a freestanding tub, plaster walls, and an arched steam shower. On the top floor, the children’s rooms have ceilings adorned with graphic bird and cloud wallpaper. The skylit bathroom is decorated with yellow and white patterned cement tile, adding a playful touch to the private space.

Material Choices and Furnishings

The project’s distinct look is shaped by a curated selection of materials. Terrazzo and cement tiles from ABC Stone and steel doors from Portella lend a contemporary feel, while plaster finishes from Adrian Coos add texture. Fixtures from Watermark and statement lighting from Lambert et Fils complement the interior. Custom furniture pieces include a Jalis Sofa by Cor Sitzmöbel and terrazzo and oak tables, emphasizing the harmonious use of white oak throughout the home.
