A Dialogue Between Eras
Walking through the historic carved wooden gate, visitors immediately encounter remnants of the original residential charm—courtyard spaces, weathered walls, and a rustic wooden door evoke a sense of nostalgia. Yet, these elements are intentionally juxtaposed with modern interventions. By combining two identical old buildings into one expansive 300 m² space, the project not only preserves the local architectural narrative but also redefines it. This seamless interplay between old and new forms the core of the design philosophy, inviting occupants to experience a curated narrative of Shanghai’s layered history.
The Visionary Behind the Space
At the helm of the project is Chief Designer Zhang Yaotian, whose creative vision permeates every detail of the space. Leading a diverse design team under the 485 MetaGalaxy label, Zhang Yaotian orchestrates an environment that encourages spontaneous conversations and creative exchanges. His approach is marked by a respect for the original structural elements while pushing the boundaries of contemporary design. The team’s collective effort is evident in the thoughtful arrangement of spaces—each area designed to evoke a specific mood, whether it’s the relaxed ambiance of the outdoor terrace or the dynamic energy of the central water bar.
Crafting a Space for Everyday Creativity
Functionality and inspiration walk hand-in-hand at the 485 MetaGalaxy. Designed as a multifunctional hub, the space supports various activities: from daily work and strategic meetings to informal chats and creative brainstorming sessions. Key areas include independent offices, communal negotiation spaces, and the prominently positioned water bar that serves as the heart of the design. This water bar, with its striking red accents and reflective surfaces, not only partitions the space subtly but also acts as a meeting point for diverse groups. Here, the conversation flows naturally, blending professional rigor with a playful spirit—a nod to the idea that creativity thrives in relaxed, unexpected encounters.
A Curated Experience in Design Culture
Every element within the space has been carefully curated to tell a story. From the assortment of decor sourced from various periods and locales to the eclectic mix of materials—wood, concrete, brick, ceramic, and metal—the design transcends mere functionality. Instead, it offers an experience, a dialogue that is both personal and collective. The environment subtly invites visitors to reminisce about the simplicity of past decades while simultaneously engaging with modern design innovations. In this way, the 485 MetaGalaxy is less about showcasing a singular style and more about celebrating a rich tapestry of design narratives that encourage both reflection and exploration.
