Christmas: Decorating for the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Decorating your home for Christmas is an activity to look forward to but most times, it can get complicated and overwhelming. You find yourself running around to put things together, wondering what elements to add to make your decorations more cohesive, and how you can transform your space into something magical.

Decorating your home for Christmas can become the best thing ever with the right tips to help you along the way.

The Tradition of having Christmas trees

Having Christmas trees in your home for the season has become a tradition. Some families go without it but it has become one of the most recognizable centerpieces of the occasion. You get to decorate your tree as you like, include items that could not feature in your other decorations, and get to experience this special feeling when you turn on the lights and see the tree shine.
There are two types of Christmas trees you can get. The first is the real tree which is preferred by most people. A real tree adds a wonderful smell to your home and going tree shopping can be a fun experience for the whole family. Buying a real tree affords you the chance to help a small business and support the environment.

However, there is a downside to shopping for real trees as it needs maintenance. A real tree can make a mess the longer it stays in your home due to the shedding of needles and you may need to buy a tree basket to help increase the aesthetics of the tree and hide away any shedding that occurred.

You can choose to go the other way by getting an artificial tree. These trees are made with plastic and have been designed to look similar to the real deal. Since they are not natural, you don’t have to worry about shedding and some might come with additional features that can provide a direction for the way you decorate. Artificial trees can come in different designs which gives you more options to choose from.

For the 11 months that it is not in use, an artificial tree would need to be stored properly and could take up quite a bit of space. This can become a problem if you have a smaller attic or not enough space to keep it. Plus, artificial trees will not give you the same fragrance and beauty as a real tree.

Both trees have their advantages and downsides. What you pick depends on your preference and which direction you want your Christmas decorations to go.

You can carry out your tree decorations with lights, homemade ornaments, baubles, ribbons, candy canes, and a tree topper to round it up.

The Outside is Just as Important

Decorating the exterior part of your home is as important as the inside of your home. It complements the interior décor and brings the season’s cheer alive. The first step is to analyze your space based on what you have in mind and your budget for it. If you have a theme for the outdoors, you need to make sure that your space is sufficient for it.

While you can go with the traditional green and red colors for your interior, you don’t have to go that route with the exterior. Experiment with your design by using single color lights or a multi-colored one with shades of blue, gold, silver, and purple.

For your patio, change the throw pillows with some colorful Christmas pillows and you can add some lights to the pillars surrounding it and a winter-themed Christmas tree in the corner. Don’t forget to put wreaths on the door and you can get the kids to help you make a little snowman for the front porch.

Make the Season bright with Lights

A good number of lights in your home, can make it sparkle and bring out the beauty of your designs. Get a couple of string or compact Christmas lights for your tree as it complements your Christmas tree decorations.

You can get some lights for blank spaces like windows, the roof, the staircase, and the fireplace.

What else to Keep in Mind

Christmas is a season to be happy and spend time with those that you love. Try not to aim for perfection and let your decorations be a reflection of what Christmas means to you.
If you have kids or friends with you for the holidays, get them to help out with the decorations. It makes the experience fun and gives you the chance to create memories.
