The 2024 Dezeen Awards have officially unveiled their longlist for the interiors category, highlighting 140 projects from talented designers and architects around the world. With a focus on creativity, sustainability, and innovation, these entries showcase the best in contemporary design across various sectors, from residential interiors to exhibition spaces. Here’s a closer look at what this year’s longlist offers.
A Global Showcase of Design Excellence
This year’s interiors longlist represents studios from 32 countries, reflecting the international nature of the Dezeen Awards. With entries from places like Colombia, Finland, Mexico, and Thailand, the awards are a true celebration of global design. London leads the pack with 22 entries, followed by Tokyo with nine, and cities like New York, Shanghai, Barcelona, and Paris also making a strong showing. Each project brings a unique perspective on how interior spaces can elevate everyday life through thoughtful design.
Diverse Projects Across Nine Categories
The 140 projects are spread across nine interior design categories, covering a wide range of spaces. From cozy residential apartments to sprawling hotels, the longlist demonstrates the versatility of interior design. Highlights include a striking hair salon in Barcelona with curved shapes and copper tones, and a wooden pavilion for the Mexican fragrance brand Xinú. Other noteworthy entries include a light-filled bookshop with a timber roof in China, a scenography exhibition in Melbourne, and a Portuguese restaurant with sleek aluminum seating.
Focus on Nature and Sustainability
One of the prominent themes in this year’s longlist is a deep connection to nature. Many projects emphasize biophilic design, integrating natural elements into the built environment to create harmony between the two. According to Chris Cooke, head of design collaborations at Bentley and one of the judges, “one of the highlights of this year’s interiors longlist is the thoughtful connection to nature in many of the projects.” This focus on nature aligns with the growing trend of sustainable design, as architects and designers look for ways to make their projects environmentally conscious while still achieving a high level of aesthetic appeal.
What’s Next for the Longlisted Projects?
The longlisted projects have been selected from over 4,130 entries, marking a significant achievement for those involved. Now, the longlist will be reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges, including industry leaders like Bobby Berk, Patricia Urquiola, and Brigette Romanek. These experts will determine which projects make it to the next round, with the shortlist announced in October. From there, a master jury will decide the final winners, who will be revealed at the Dezeen Awards party in London on November 26, 2024.
