Ivanhoe Grammar Senior Years & Science Centre, Australia / by McBride Charles Ryan

The brief for this new school building included a variety of general learning areas, provision for the senior year teachers and a science centre. The circular shaped plan had an appropriate civic quality based on the school’s original masterplan. However, rather repeating the circular pattern inside, the designers chose to use geometry and colour to define the central courtyards, light wells and learning spaces. The sharp angles and vivid colours of the interior form a dramatic contrast with the round form and muted tones of the drum-like outer structure.

ISMO, Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay / KAAN Architecten

Dutch firm KAAN Architecten www.kaanarchitecten.com presents the new Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay (Université Paris-Sud/CNRS), part of the future campus of the Université Paris-Saclay (France). Robust and elegant, while essentially open in character, the building is distinguished by an harmonic coexistence of nature and scientific research.

The Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay (ISMO) has recently moved into new premises designed by KAAN Architecten. The building is located on the Plateau de Saclay, 20 km south-west of Paris. Initiated in 2010, and born of the fusion of three research laboratories, this higher institute for molecular physics and physico-chemistry, under the supervision of Université Paris-Sud and CNRS, employees a staff of 170 collaborators. ISMO merges with the Centre de Physique Matière et Rayonnement, grouping physics laboratories, an educational building and a reception centre for international researchers.

This is the second children educational space that ARCHSTUDIO designed for Poly Wedo Art Educational Institution. It is located on the second floor of Beijing Damei Central. This institution mainly teaches children music, dance, tea, cooking, and craft courses, so the space design needs to provide appropriate classrooms based on above needs. Inspired by rockery artificial hills in Chinese traditional garden, the design creates multiple ranges of “artificial hills” that allow children to happily play here.

Educational Ensemble Terenten – Houses for Children / by feld72

feld72 recently completed the redevelopment of the primary school in Terenten/South Tyrol. Together with the kindergarten they built in 2010, it now forms a modern educational ensemble, which is directly embedded in the village life of Terenten.

Starting with the original building of the 1970s, they turned the school into a sensory instrument, which changes and sharpens perceptions and encourages the children to discover, experiment and research, thereby offering an active learning environment.
