Sustainable Manufactured Homes Gaining Traction: Stylish Trends Making Waves

There are 22 million people living in manufactured homes on 4.2 million estimated home sites in the US. Manufactured and prefab structures are alternative affordable housing schemes that not only provide shelter but are also built stylishly. Gone are the days when manufactured homes were viewed as compromises to traditional houses. From solar panels and rainwater collection to floor heating and reinforced windows, prefab units have completely undergone a transformation in its architectural design.

28 Social Housing Units in Courbevoie / by Koz architectes

In 2007, Groupe 3F and the Courbevoie Town Council launched a competition for a social housing project on the last remaining plot in the urban development zone of Les Fauvelles. The instructions given to the teams were as follows: « the project must present new approaches for social housing in densely occupied urban settings». Our proposal was selected over those offered by SOA Architectes and LAN Architecture.

House in Lumino / by Davide Macullo Architects

Located in the Swiss Alpine village of Lumino, just north of Bellinzona, this house stands as a monolithic element, quietly complementing and echoing its context. The surrounding area is characterised by traditional stone built houses, many of which date back centuries and are marked by their use of this single construction material. The new house is intended as a relevant response to and contemporary interpretation of the vernacular; its exposed reinforced concrete form recalls the revered strength and resonates the presence of these old stone houses. Sitting on the edge of the old village, the house acts as a sort of bastion between the old core and the modern residential expansion.

Le 49 House, Kanagawa / by APOLLO Architects

Located on Mount Kamakura, this site boasts a stunning view overlooking Sagami Bay. The clients, a husband-and-wife couple who had been living in a high-rise condominium in downtown Tokyo, fell in love with the location at first sight, taking an instant liking to the view and the lush green surroundings, and decided to move here. The husband is a keen architecture buff who went on architectural tours throughout Europe to see buildings while he was working in the UK, and decided to commission a new residence with an attached workshop for his wife. Accordingly, we decided to create a modern piece of architecture whose every detail would convey a uniquely Japanese aesthetic to the international guests who would visit.

Green Places Community Clubhouse, Taiwan / by Chain 10 Urban Space Design

Keng-Fu Lo, lead designer of the Green Places Community Clubhouse, located in Tainan, Taiwan, sees a building as a living being. Breaking with architectural tradition, each floor of the clubhouse has its own distinctive design. The building is a shared space for the residents of an independent community. It provides spaces for dining, reading, exercising, learning, sharing and communication. The floors are stacked vertically as a series of free curves.

Vallée du Parc Residence, Canada / Chevalier Morales Architectes

The Vallée du Parc Residence sits in a bucolic valley in Mauricie, a south-central region of Québec. Originally inspired by a reinterpretation of the work of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the ground-floor plan is shaped by a studied insertion of various terraces and its relation to the automobile. From a distance, the eye is attracted by the complex angular roof that establishes a geometrical reciprocity with the surrounding hills.

Loft Panzerhalle in Salzburg, Austria / by smartvoll

Smartvoll wins the 2018 AZ Award

The Austrian architecture studio smartvoll won the prestigious AZ Award 2018 for their project Loft Panzerhalle in Salzburg, Austria. During the annual gala held in Toronto, 64 finalists from more than 950 submissions competed for the trophy. The Loft Panzerhalle won the award in the residential interior category.
