As the first effort in the revitalization of Colchester’s historic St. Botolph’s Quarter, firstsite:newsite anchors the long-term development plan of an under-utilized district. Rafael Viñoly Architects won the design competition for this new visual arts facility by expanding on the project brief—once the construction site was moved slightly eastward, the new museum was designed to provide extra public space and parkland and to identify visually with the historic surroundings while making an architectural statement.

Here the images of the JDS’s on going project, the MERMAID 2.0. The location of the project is still confidential, it covers 100,000 m2 includes a dolphinarium, wellness center, vacation homes, and a hotel.

Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the construction works of King Abdullah II House of Culture & Art secheduled to start in early 2012. The project located in the centre of Amman, Jordan, and aimed to be the premiere venue for theatre, music and dance performance and education in the country. Inspired by the magnificent ancient city of Petra, the building includes a 1600-seat concert theatre, 400-seat theatre, educational centre, rehearsal rooms, and galleries.

Meydan City, Dubai Keeps Going

Meydan City is a 200 million sq ft project in Dubai separated into four distinct areas including the Racecourse with Meydan Hotel (67 million sq ft); Meydan Horizons (15 million sq ft); Godolphin Park and Meydan Metropolis. According to the report, the racecourse sector was completed and the rest has gone to construction tender ignoring the recent economic difficulties. Many of the main building projects were designed by Teo A. Khing from Malaysia.

Rolex Learning Center by SANAA

The design of Rolex Learning Center was proposed by SANAA for a competition in 2004. And the construction of the building has been completed and scheduled to open for operation next week. Aimed to be the main point of entry to the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) campus in Switzerland, the single-story building has a giant space and 14 rounded voids.

Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer, Italy

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer ten years ago, the Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer sited on difficult landscape in Ravello, Salerno, Italy. The project covers 1,500 sq m space includes an auditorium, a semicircular stage, a recording studio, and a rehearsal room. There is a large outside terrace that enable vistors to experience panoramic views of the coastline. The auditorium has been open since January 29.

Like many cities in China, Hangzhou is undergoing rapid urban change.  While the city center had historically developed around the West Lake area, opportunities for industry and commerce have shifted the city’s expansion towards the Qian Tang riverfront.  New construction has tripled the city’s size in the past 10 years leaving behind a modern architectural fabric that is powerful in scale, yet still in need of public place making.
