Designing in Teheran by Davide Marchetti Architetto

designing in teheran

Project description from Davide Marchetti Architetto:
Planning choices: The main idea is to create a solid, massive and “sculptural object” by simply stacking volumes one above the other and twisting them more and more as they overlap: what seems to be a banal gesture becomes rather a way to obtain a complex and articulated shape.
The different volumes placed in different heights and directions generate a geometrical method to have large terraces and flat roofs. These places are gently lightened and shaded by the multiple angles and corners of the building. In the ground level there are separated areas and volumes for three commercial units facing a public space (a sort of “mall”) that connects Vali Asr Avenue to Tajirish Square and Salmak Street. In this way every shop has more window area to show goods and there a covered public small “piazza” in-between the stores. In the same area there are private entrances to stairs and elevators carrying people to the office spaces and apartments floor on upper levels.

This project, undertaken with Chang-jo Architects, was an invited competition intended to explore the future of the development of the market and in particular, how it could become more integrated with the city and the surrounding neighborhoods. Of particular concern was the visual chaos and smell associated with the market, and whether or not some type of enclosure was warranted.

Hong Kong Design Institute

Project information by Johnstonmarklee:
The proposed 60,000 square meter Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) is conceived as an iconic presence for the school and the community. As an 8 story building amid surrounding high-rises and mountains in the distance, the HKDI offers a new building scale for the site. Stacked and offset building modules provide not only structural stability and an economical means of construction, but also allow for unique juxtapositions between indoor and outdoor spaces. Classrooms, exhibition spaces, and lounges are interspersed with open air terraces and cascading balconies. A grand public space nested within the building provides a stage enriched with art, entertainment, academic activities, and the animated flow of students and visitors who move through the building.
