Beijing Olympic 2008 Goes Beyond Architecture

REN Building in Shanghai

Designed by Copenhagen based group of architects, BIG, the REN Building is expected to be a recognizable landmark for the 2010 World Expo in Shangai, China. As you can see in the image, the building is shaped by two buildings that unite on the water. The building will mix-use the function of hotel, sports and conference center.

Linked Hybrid in Beijing is Alive

Designed by Steven Holl, the Linked Hybrid in Beijing is being constructed as you can see in the image above. Thank to Iwan Baan who proudly captured the progress.

Current development in Beijing is almost entirely “object buildings” and free standing towers. This “city within a city” envisions urban space as the central aim—as well as all the activities and programs that can support the daily life of over 2500 inhabitants: café’s, delis, laundry, dry cleaners, florists etc, line the main public passages. The eight towers are linked at the twentieth floor by a ring of cafes and services.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the new terminal (Terminal 3) of Beijing Capital International Airport is the first building to break the one million square meter barrier. The airport is part of China’s preparation for the 29th World Olympic along with other iconic building in Beijing such as Bird Nest and Aquatic Center.

Norman Foster said: “This new terminal is the largest and most advanced airport building in the world – a celebration of the thrill and poetry of flight. A gateway to Beijing, it communicates a unique sense of place, its dragon-like form evoking traditional Chinese colours and symbols.”
