The project that Jacek proposes responds, in a conceptual form, to EDC’s* mission. Designed to be integrated into the architectural context of 150 Slater in Ottawa, it is also related to his ARBORESCENT SCULPTURES, which build, in a formal and symbolic mode, on the notion of vital force embodied by plant growth and result in the representation of a fundamental archetype: the tree of life.

A temporary construction that was intended to be immaterial, built with light, swift as the design and assembly. An ethereal ceiling (less enlightened than anticipated in the project) has helped to remake the human scale in the exhibition pavilion. A blue track became the continuous background in wall and floor, where three cylinders with expanded light rest, showcasing anchor home appliances and receiving visitors.

The proposal of Dreiecksplatz wins the unanimously voted First Prize for Europan 11 in Vienna, Austria. No runner-ups or honorable mentions were selected for this site.

Located between the Vienna Ring and Vienna Woods, the site embraces the marks of both environment – urban and nature – as a basis for future development. Currently surrounded by houses with a large amount of private green space, what is needed in the site is a generous, quality public space that will invite and sustain diverse groups of community to gather, live and work by. Major forms of transit – bus, tram and bicycle – anchor three corners of the triangle-shaped plaza with an integrated train platform in the middle. Various residential, commercial and social programs both frame and spill out toward the public triangle and support its liveliness. Green space is maximized at all different scales, fostering health, education and social interactions, while each kind of nature – from ‘wild woods’ to herb garden – defines the atmosphere of individual housing zone.

“What, in my view, especially commends him as a candidate for the Gold Medal,” said Harry Cobb, FAIA, founder of Pei Cobb Freed, “is his brilliantly demonstrated capacity to join his refined design sensibility to a rigorously exploratory theoretical project.”
Steven Holl stated, “I am grateful, I am still beginning and I consider this award shared with all my collaborators. I feel this award is a positive advocacy to make theoretical explorations and experimental works. I was on the way to my final review at Columbia University when I received the call from Washington D.C. and felt it connected to my teaching and efforts toward education. I remember John Hejduk’s statement that teaching is a social contract, and I remain committed to teaching.”

MUNICH, the Barcelona based fashion- and sports footwear brand opens a shop in Ireland. Carrying on with its expansion plan, the brand has chosen this country to make its international gate with its first shop in the shopping mall Kildare Village.

DEAR DESIGN created this 60 m2 space following the design spirit that characterises all MUNICH STORES: art and design in every shop. The interior evokes a warm and comfortable feeling to make the client feel at home. To achieve this effect, the studio used simple and everyday materials, such as the fireproof MUNICH shoelaces. More than 67 km of red shoe laces wrap and furnish the room. The shoe laces are spread over the ceiling, taking form of a traditional roof and dropping like pendulums.

The clear and simple external play of geometrical volumes embracing one another seems to arise from the steep terrain. The house is fully covered with a green roof that facilitates its integration into the landscape and acts as an insulating layer as well as helping reduce heat build-up in summer. A wide gateway acting as a carport and covered entrance rests on a retaining wall/storage unit that was necessary given the condition of the very steep terrain. Retaining walls of the lower bearing has been achieved by moving large round stones recovered during the construction of the street above.

BIG + Kollision + Schmidhuber & Partner team up to bring BIG’s vision of future urban mobility to life for AUDI at Design Miami/ 2011, running from November 30th through December 4th adjacent to Art Basel Miami Beach. BIG originally presented the concept as an entry for the 2010 AUDI Urban Future Award introducing a future city paved with a digital surface that liberates the streets from existing boundaries and allows for a new flexibility of public use.

The 190 m2 three-dimensional LED installation provides a glimpse of the future city where the public space is shared between pedestrians and driverless cars. The entire surface would be infused with a continuous flow of information allowing for real-time interaction between vehicles and their environment. Mounted above the Design Miami installation, 3D cameras track the movement of passers-by processing the data into a generative artwork that feeds back into the LED panels.
