The book aims to demonstrate a methodology for sustainable architecture using containers.

The containers have been designed to store and transport goods over long distances, and in a tight, economical and safe way. However, it also happens, the curious coincidence that the spaces that have been designed for storing and transporting goods, have a proper human scale. That is, they are also valid for designing living spaces.

However, do not forget that the containers have not been designed to be lived in. Therefore, the first thing to be done when using containers in architecture is to ensure the minimum conditions of habitability inside. Something that is not taken into account by almost all the proposals, which actually constitute a “neo-shanty towns”, camouflaged –with stunning external design- to be accepted by society. On the other hand, buildings by no means are “sustainable” simply because they have been designed using containers. What’s more, most buildings made by containers offer poorer quality of life, and consume more energy than conventional buildings.

Therefore, Luis De Garrido analyzes all actions to be carried out in order to make habitable the buildings made ​​by containers, and also achieve real sustainable architecture using them.

These actions include:

1. Ensure a proper and effective bioclimatic design
2. Improve the thermal and acoustic behavior
3. Provide insulation on the outside of the architectural envelope
4. Harness the enormous thermal inertia of the container
5. Ensure breathability and natural ventilation
6. Ensure waterproofing, and prevent condensation
7. Provide healthy, ecological and easily replaceable interior finishes
8. Ensure electromagnetic balance and eliminate the effect of “Faraday cage”
9. Ensure the recovery, repair and reuse of components
10. Optimize -as much as possible- resources and materials
11. Decrease emissions as much as possible
12. Reduce waste as much as possible
13. Decrease energy consumption as much as possible

To illustrate the process, Luis De Garrido analyzes -exhaustively- 4 model buildings that he has projected using containers:

The study of each project includes a general statement of its objectives, a sustainable analysis, the study of bioclimatic strategies used and the most outstanding innovations. Each project includes: plans, computer graphics, photographs, and sustainable-bioclimatic sketches.

Undoubtedly the most important and relevant aspect of the book is the comprehensive bioclimatic analysis of each project. In total, are included about 150 illustrations and 60 bioclimatic sketches, showing the operation of the analyzed projects.

This analysis shows that it is possible to control climatic conditions inside buildings made by containers, simply by purely architectural decisions, without technological devices. Without a doubt, this is one of the most important contributions of Luis de Garrido to contemporary architecture.

On the other hand, the book shows that you can achieve a truly sustainable architecture made by containers, integrated in each different setting, with high bioclimatic level, without creating any emissions, with an infinite life cycle and energy and water self-sufficient and even, in specific cases, food self-sufficient.

The book has a strong educational and training value, but at the same time it is a professional and effective tool for all architects and builders, who wish to deal with the sustainable design of buildings made by containers.
